The 2017/2018 season of the Cameroon Professional Football League (Pro-League) has wrapped up following Day-34 matches which were played over the weekend in stadia across the national territory.
At the end of the season, Cotton Sport Football Club of Garoua was crowned champions with 69 points. The Cotton Weavers of the North had a clinical finish by whitewashing Dragon of Yaoundé 3-0 to lift the trophy again.
In the other matches played last Sunday, Stade Renard recorded a similar victory against Fovu Club of Baham. Aigle Royale and Young Sports Academy finished on a goalless tie, which was the same score in the match pitting New Star against Feutcheu FC, while Union Sportive and Apejes FC separated on a goal each. Colombe of Dja defeated Unisport 2-0, a similar score was recorded by Bamboutos over Yaoundé FC as well as Eding Sport against Union Mouvement Sportif de Loum.
Cotton’s victory came as no surprised as 3 days to the end of the season, the team was already declared champions of the League.Cotton Sport gave a wide margin to runners up, Union Mouvement Sportif de Loum which backed home 55 points and Bamboutos of Mbouda which finished on the third position with 53 points. All the three teams have automatically qualified for the CAF Champions League next year.
At the bottom of the classification table stands three teams which have been condemned for relegation to League Two; Unisport Sport of Bafang, Aigle Royal de Menoua and Yaoundé FC recording 40, 32 and 26 points respectively.
These teams would be replaced by the champions of the MTN Elite Two including PWD Bamenda, Avion Academy FC and Tonnerre Kalara Club. PWD is making its comeback after 14 years of absence as well as Tonnerre, which was relegated to the inferior league in 2015.Avion is a new comer in the game.
At the end of the Professional Football League, a total of 612 matches were played and 575 goals were scored with Cotton Sport scoring the highest number of goals (59). The league faced many challenges especially for teams playing in the Anglophone Regions like Young Sports Academy and also financial challenges which saw the temporal suspension of the League at the beginning of the month of July.
