Cameroon’s Njie Efundem Daphne, popularly known as Daphne is the winner of the 2018 edition of the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA 2018).
The 5th edition of the AFRIMMA Award took place in Dallas, Texas on October 7, 2018, a date which the over 6.5 million Cameroonians went to the polls to choose a new President that will pilot the affairs of Cameroon for the next seven years.
As Cameroonians at home were busy choosing a new leader for the country, another Cameroonian was being crowned as the best female music star in Central Africa.
Even though this year’s edition of AFRIMMA Award was not as boisterous as the previous years, the low-keyed effervescence didn’t taint the glamour that often characterised the Award.
The 2018 AFRIMMA Award handed over to Daphne was like a perfect 29th anniversary present as the star just celebrated her 29th birthday on September 20, 2018.
Speaking to the press, Daphne said her secret to success is “work hard, play hard”.
The stage goddess, as she is fondly called, is taking her career and the Cameroon Music Industry to another level. Drawing inspiration from an array of cultures, Daphne has been able to blend Pop, Afro-Pop music, Afro-Beats, Reggae, Makossa and Urban Music.
She has released over 10 albums, recording millions of fans worldwide all thanks to the social media. She hails from the Bakweri land in Buea Sub- Division of the South West Region of Cameroon.
Though from a humble background, the star has proven that there is no limit to what a person can achieve though hard work, dedication and humility.
Daphne leapt into the music limelight in 2015 with her hit song titled” Calee” produced by Dr. Nkeng Stephen, another outstanding Video Director in Cameroon.
The 2018 AFRIMMA Award came with a lot of expectations from Cameroonians across the board, as many Cameroonians in the entertainment industry where nominated in various categories of the awards.
Most, if not all, talented Cameroonian artists like Dr. Nkeng Stephens, Charlotte Dipanda, Daphne, Reniss, Blanche Bailly, Locko, and Gasha were all nominated for the award.
These top talented Cameroonian artists had to battle it out with other top stars from across the globe in their various categories. At the end, Stevens Music Entertainment’s Daphne brought home the glorious trophy, thereby inscribing the name of the country in the AFRIMMA Awards record books.
Daphne won the award of Best Female Artist in Central Africa. Speaking after the event, the laureate said the award is a dream come true.
She was upbeat that the award will open more doors of opportunity for her, especially at a time when her entertainment services are solicited by all and sundry.
To her, music “is my life and passion, so I believe I’m getting there slowly but surely.”
While other renowned artists like Wizkid, a Nigerian hip-hop star won Song of the Year with his hit song titled ‘Soco’, the likes of Fally Ipupa carried the night with three prestigious awards.
The AFRIMMA Awards is an event organised in the Diaspora that caters for all musical genres including but not limited to sounds such as Afro-Beats, Assiko, Bongo, Coupe Declae among others.
