Cameroon Journalists demand freedom for detained colleague

Cameroon (National Time)-Scores of journalists across Cameroon have taken to different media platforms demanding the immediate release of Mimi Mefo Takambou, Journalist at Equinoxe Television detained at the New Bell Prison in the economic city of Douala after Wednesday’s late night interrogations.

Mimi has spent a night already at the prison facility. Reports hold that after a lengthy interrogation spanning 2:00PM till 11:00 PM Wednesday, a military Prosecutor ordered for her to be remanded in custody.

Since news of her detention surfaced, her colleagues across the country, especially of English extraction have posted messages across media platforms seeking for her immediate release. Most Journalists have replaced their profile pictures with that of the detained journalist.

Besides such actions, many have taken to the hash tag “#Freemimimefo” as a way of pressing for her release. Pictures of the journalist are trending across social media platforms as her colleagues and fans continue to push for her to regain freedom.

At the moment, details relating to why she has been remanded into custody are still sketchy.  The National Times gathered that, the Editor-in-Chief  of the English news desk at Equinox is accused of publishing controversial information on her social media handle. Reports hold that the information is related to the controversial circumstances under which the American Missionary Charles Truman Wesco died on October 30 in the restive North West Region.

Before her summon earlier last week, information had been circulating months back that the journalist was under radar regarding her approach in reporting the Anglophone Crisis.
