Various versions of Mimi Mefo’s arrest, detention

Yaounde (National Times)-Several versions are now emerging following the arrest and detention of popular Anglophone Journalist, Mimi MefoTakambou, on the night of Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

According to the Lawyer of the detained Journalists, her crime stems from the report she made concerning the death of American missionary, Charles Wesco, who died a fortnight ago in Bambili.

Barrister Alice Nkom said her client’s report was based on family sources which alleged that the bullets used on Wesco were from the military.

She said because of this, State authorities have detained her client at the New Bell Prison, Douala for breaching State security.

However, according to prominent opposition activists and Chairperson of the Cameroon People’s Party (CPP), Edith Kah Walla, Mimi’s crime is politically motivated because she has been exposing crimes committed by Government soldiers, especially in the Anglophone Regions. Kah Walla said the authorities in Douala have confirmed that, “les orders venaient de Yaoundé,” literally translated as the decision to jail her is coming from Yaoundé.

Meanwhile, on the document inviting Mimi Mefo to the Gendarmerie Legion Command in Douala for questioning, the Colonel, Commander, Boum Bissoue Raymond, attested that investigations have been opened against Mimi Mefo for “false information” and “cyber criminality.”

While speaking over Voice of America (VOA) shortly after being notified, Mimi Mefo argued that she is being prosecuted for her updated reports about socio-political issues in Cameroon. “The problems here actually are my reports, my debates, my social media reports and my day to day, minute by minute updates on my websites and social medial on political and social issues in Cameroon. When you report the atrocities, you are threatened and considered as an enemy,” Mimi Mefo said.

While waiting for her first appearance at the Military Tribunal, Bonanjo, Douala, her case has already generated many comments. Some are now accusing the Government of bias as when State media, CRTV showed fake representatives of Transparency International who validated the Presidential election as free and fair, nothing was done to management or the journalists behind the scene. The situation has also produced uproar among her colleagues; nationally and internationally, rights group are pressurising the Government for her immediate release as well as other Journalists jailed.
