Yaoundé (National Times)-The Government of Cameroon through the Minister of Communication has dispelled rumours that the health situation of arrested members of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) including its President, Professor Maurice Kamto is deteriorating.
According to a message from the Ministry of Communication which was published in English and French, Maurice Kamto is presently doing well and in good shape.
“Mr Maurice Kamto is currently healthy and eats well. Any allegation to the contrary is unfounded,” a message on the twitter handle of the Ministry of Communication read.
The Minister is reacting to recent reports which hold that some members of Kamto’s team are currently undergoing a hunger strike.
One newspaper on Wednesday, alleged that the health of the Treasurer of the party, Professor Alain Fogue, has deteriorated to the point where he is between life and death.
Other sources say the hunger strike action was launched by Kamto himself on January 30, pressing for the release of all those arrested.
Pressure is mounting on the Government to release Kamto and others who were arrested on Monday, January 28 in Douala without any warrant of arrest or notification following a protest march they organised on Saturday, January 26.
In the latest of these moves, the President of the United Nations’ (UN) International Law Commission has written to the Secretary General of the UN to intervene and cause the respect of the rights of Kamto who used to the body’s President.
The Minister’s note is coming as a face-saving measure in the midst of pressure nationally and internationally.
