Former Defence Minister, Wife Barred From Leaving Cameroon

Yaoundé (National Times)-Former Defence and Transport Minister, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o and wife Bernadette Mebe Ngo’o have been barred from leaving the country by the Prosecutor of the Special Criminal Court (SCC).

The decision is contained in a leaked secret document signed by the Chief of Investigation at the Court dated January 31, 2019.

Also barred from leaving the country are Mboutou Ghislain Victor and Mbangue Maxime Leonard all former collaborators of the ex-Minister.

According to the document, the persons should be arrested and if they attempted to flee and presented to the special division of the Judicial Police in Yaoundé.

The reason for preventing them from leaving the country is not known but sources at the Court say it is not unconnected to series of corruption charges leveled against the former Minister, his wife and close associates.

Sources at the Court say Mebe Ngo’o and wife would be presented to the court on Tuesday, February 12. Few days ago the house of the Civil Administrator of exceptional class was raided by security officers who conducted a search.

Once tipped to be Biya’s successor, Mebe Ngo’o rose from the rank of a Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, in Yaoundé to the Director of the Civil Cabinet at the Presidency.

He later on became the Police boss as well as Minister of Defence and his last post of responsibility was the Transport Ministry where he was dropped following the October 2, 2015. He hails from the same Dja et Lobo Division as Paul Biya and has been a pivotal element in the series of political victories recorded by Biya and his ruling CPDM party.
