Slovenian woman allegedly cut off her hand for $637,000 insurance payout

A 21-year-old woman cut off her hand with a circular saw in a bid to claim a $637,000 insurance payout, Slovenian police have claimed.

The woman allegedly amputated herself in January in a family plot to cash in on a newly-acquired injury insurance policy.

Police said the woman’s hand was sliced above the wrist at a home in the country’s capital, Ljubljana, ABC News in the US reported.

Her family took her to Ljubljana University Medical Centre, saying she injured herself while sawing tree branches.

Police said the group left the severed hand behind to ensure the disability was permanent.

Doctors called police, as per Slovenian law, who recovered the hand in time for it to be re-attached.

“With one of her accomplices, she intentionally amputated her left hand, hoping to stage it as an accident,” Ljubljana police spokesman Valter Zrinski said.

The woman and a 29-year-old relative were arrested and face up to eight years in prison if convicted of insurance fraud.
