Yaounde(National Times)-Cameroon’s exploit in Female football was raised to the fore Tuesday April 9th as Women’s world cup trophy entered the nation on a special tour ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup billed for France in June this year.
It was displayed at the Hilton hotel in the presence of Sports Minister, Narcisse Moelle Kombi, Centre Regional Governor, Naseri Paul Bea, FECAFOOT President, Seidou Mbombo Njoya, female striker Gael Enganamouit and the FIFA ambassador to Cameroon Sara Booth who congratulated Cameroon on their efforts in promoting female football.
“We are very happy that Cameroonians are so supportive of women’s football. It makes me so happy to see that, and I’m filled with great pride knowing that your country, your government and your Federation are so behind you,” Sara Booth said.
She went further to reveal that they hope to have an extraordinary event in France – “Canada in 2015 was remarkable. We believe France will be magnificent. With an ambition to have over 1 million spectators at the matches and over 1 billion broadcast views, we have ambitious targets.”
As the trophy was being presented, the FIFA Ambassador said she wants Cameroonians to have that urge to feel the trophy even though they can’t touch it yet. “We want to excite you, we want to engage you, and we want you all, even though you can’t touch that beautiful trophy, we all want you to go home tonight and dream about touching it and that is our job today,” Booth stated.
The trophy was also received at the Star building by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute on behalf of President Paul Biya. Other activities were also organised on the side line of the event including a football exercise for 200 girls aged between 8 to 13 years. This was at the Yaounde military stadium alongside a match pitting the indomitable lionesses against division one side Amazon FAP who were defeated 2-1.
After Cameroon, the next destination of the trophy is Nigeria.It would be the 16th destination in the tour out of a total of 24 countries. The Trophy will be presented in Nigeria this Wednesday April 10th.
