Buea (National Times)-Civil Servants across Cameroon’s crisis-plagued South West Region will have to sign attendance sheets during celebrations marking the country’s National Day Celebrations on May 20th .
The Governor of the South West Region Bernard Okalia Bilai announced the measure on Wednesday May 8th . It surfaced during the Regional preparatory meeting towards the National Day Celebrations staged at the Buea Council Hall.
In his address at the meeting, the Regional boss said, attendance sheets will be sent to Divisional and Sub Divisional Levels for civil servants to sign indicating their presence. Participation of state employees at the event has been declared compulsory.
The actions are similar to those being implemented in the neighbouring North West Region facing the same security challenges.
Celebration of national events have become avenues for scuffles between the government on one hand and separatists on the other front. The population has usually been forced to stay indoors leaving ceremonial grounds empty.
Administrators have usually been left with the sole option of oftentimes using persons earning a living from the state pay roll to cover up.
