Spain coach sacked: Julen Lopetegui fired one day before start of World Cup 2018

The Spanish Football Association have sacked Julen Lopetegui one day before the start of the World Cup in Russia after he withheld the news that he was replacing Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid following the tournament.

Appearing at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday, new Spanish FA (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales announced that Lopetegui’s behaviour in the build-up to Russia 2018 has been unacceptable, having agreed to take over at Madrid upon the conclusion of Spain’s World Cup campaign.

Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu on a three-year deal.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said it had dismissed the 51-year-old because the negotiation occurred “without any information to the RFEF.
