Biya orders investigation into extra-judicial killings, seven soldiers arrested

Seven soldiers have been arrested in connection to the extra-judicial killings that happened in the Far North region a month ago.

A communiqué issued by the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma and read on CRTV Friday August 10, has said government is alarmed by a video in which soldiers are summarily executing civilians.

Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary

“The Minister of Communication informs the public that following the publication of a video stating unacceptable abuses perpetrated by armed men against women and children, the Head of State has ordered the opening of an investigation to clarify this case and to establish the possible responsibilities,” the statement read in part.

The investigation led to the arrest of the following military personnel:

Lieutenant FOBASSOU Etienne
Sergeant BITYALA Cyriaque Hilaire
Corporal GODWE MANA Didier Jeannot
Corporal Tsanga
Private Sergeant DONOSSOU Barnabas
Private SECOND MANASSE Jacobai Jonathan
Private First Class NTIECHE FEWOU Ghisiain

The persons concerned have been put at the disposal of the courts and will be subject to a fair trial, the minister says.

It goes without saying that they enjoy the presumption of innocence, until proven otherwise.
The Minister of Communication says President Biya wants that the abuses that may be perpetrated by some soldiers, are systematically investigated and sanctions meted out where appropriate.

Tchiroma recommences in the Defense and Security Forces the confidence, support and appreciation of the Head of State and the entire nation for the bravery, professionalism and determination with which they fight against terrorists and other criminal groups, in order to defend the territorial integrity, peace and stability of our country as well as the security of citizens and their property.

It should be noted that two weeks ago, the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma said the video showing the extra-judicial killings of women and children was “fake” news but yesterday on state media, the Minister said the Soldiers who carried out summary execution of women and children in the Far North have been arrested.
