Gunmen in what seems like an affront to Adamu Ndam Njoya, candidate at the 2018 presidential election in Cameroon have kidnapped a senior official of the party in Kumba in the restive South West Region.
D. A Takoungang, political bureau member of the Cameroon, Democratic Union, CDU, was reportedly kidnapped Monday September 10. Takoungang was reportedly whisked to the unknown from his Fiango residence.
Family members, friends and acquaintances of Takoungang got disturbed after his telephone lines went dead. Since then, very little has been heard of his whereabouts.
Besides being a member of the political bureau, Takoungang is equally the Divisional leader of the CDU in Meme Division. The politician is a retired tutor who has served in Kumba for decades.
He is the most vocal of Ndam Njoya’s party stalwarts in the South West Region. Takougang has made several media outings castigating the Biya regime for being unable to manage the Anglophone crisis.
The abducted politician is a veteran of the revolutionary wing of the Union des Population du Cameroun, UPC. Takougang lived the period of the armed wing of the UPC before joining the CDU party.
Though it is not clear why the politician has been abducted, public perception is that, Takougang is victim of his tribal origin. He is of the Bamileke tribe from the West Region of Cameroon. Hundreds of Bamilekes have relocated out of villages and cities in Anglophone zones for fear of being kidnapped.
The retired teacher was also into money lending. Some people suspect that, his abductors might be agents of people who owe him money and want to use the current crisis to settle scores.
