A number of reputed former players of Cameroon’s national football team are part of a delegation that has welcomed Confederation of African Football(CAF) President Ahmad Ahmad to the country this Tuesday, October 2.
Authorities of the country’s Sports and Physical Education Ministry incorporated the players as the nation battles to retain its hosting rights of the continental show piece for 2019.
Among the players of fame who received Ahmad at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport in Yaounde 8:am are former skippers, Rigobert Song Bahanag, Joseph Antione Bell and four times African player of the year, Samuel Eto’o fils.
Sports and Physical Education Minister, Ismael Bidoung Mkpatt, President of the 2019 AFCON Local Organising Committee, Centre Regional Governor, Naseri Paul Bea, Members of the FECAFOOT Normalisation Committee and other officials of the Sports Ministry formed the delegation that welcomed the CAF boss into Cameroon.
A few months back, Minister Bidoung Mkpatt staged a meeting in Yaounde incorporating a host of former national team players of different generation into the preparations for the 2019 sports jamboree.
Others such as Samule Eto’o Fils are believed to be of immense football diplomacy in canvassing at higher levels for CAF to allow Cameroon host the tournament in 2019.
It is hoped that the CAF boss would use his time in Cameroon to get more information on the state of the country’s readiness to host the tournament.
On Monday October 1, a couple of former players of the national team among them Roger Milla visited some project sites and later granted a press briefing sounding positive of Cameroon’s progress to host the tournament. The move is seen as a public relations move to calm the critical nerves of the CAF boss.
