Mora (National Times)-At least four people have been killed and four others injured in a suspected Boko Haram attack on the island of Fofia in the Logon and Chari division in the Far North region of Cameroon, according to the AFP news agency.
The incident occurred on Saturday night breaking Sunday when armed men on board vehicles attacked and destroyed part of a military base and businesses.
The victims include a marine officer and three civilians. Cameroonian and Chadian forces are said to have fought back and pushed the assailants away.
This is the latest in a series of attacks by the terrorist group this year in Cameroon. In mid-April another bloody attack left at least 11 civilians dead in Tcharkamari, in the same Far North region.
At least seven Cameroonian soldiers have been killed in Boko Haram attacks and the explosion of a landmine since the start of April.
This shows that the group which was believed to be technically defeated is yet to disappear. Moreover, observers belief Boko Haram is taking advantage of Cameroon’s heavy deployment of active forces in the restive North West and South West regions to strike and stage a comeback.
But even in neighbouring Chad the situation is not really different. Sources say at least 30 soldiers have been murdered since March by the same group. Nigeria and Niger are facing the same challenges from Boko Haram.
