7000 Fake Drivers’ Licenses Circulating In Cameroon-Transport Minister

Yaounde (National Times)-Cameroon’s Transport Minister Jean Ernest Messina Ngale Bibehe says, some 7000 fake drivers licenses are in circulation within the country. Ministe Bibehe disclosed the figures  Tuesday April 2nd during a press conference to update public knowledge of Government’s measures to  ensure interurban transport security.

According to the Transport boss, stringent measures are needed to control the production of drivers’ licenses. He stated the licenses must be issued only to persons who have attended competent driving schools.

Detailing issues associated with road accidents, Minister Bibehe disclosed that, some 400 road safety clubs exist in colleges nationwide to raise awareness on highway security. The minister attributed cause of 70 percent of road accidents to human error. 10 percent of road accidents he briefed was the result of poor roads.

During the same press outing, Minister Bibehe declared that, some 500.000 pieces of road safety campaign paraphernalia have been provided to the national gendarmerie and the Delegation of national security.

It emerged from the same outing that, 52 percent of vehicles on the roads in Cameroon are beyond 15years old. This minister observed is not good for the users of roads.

The outing of the transport minister comes barely days after he signed a decision at the close of March, 2019 suspending some 85 inter urban transport agencies for one month. The move falls within actions taken by government to roll back incessant accidents that claim thousands of lives annually.

The minister decries that, the loss of a single life through a road accident is a loss too much for the country to bear.
