Yaoundé(National Times)-Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions arrived the nation’s capital Yaounde, Tuesday June 18 for “ancestral blessings” before departing for Egypt where they will compete for 2019 edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Head coach Clarence Seedorf will leave for the Egyptian city of Ismailia this Thursday where they would be based. The team flew in from Qatar where it trained and acclimatise. The official unveiling of the team’s jersey, a press conference and a gala match are on the menu of the lion’s short stay in Cameroon.
It has become a tradition for the team to always come back home for a gala match before its passionate fans. It is traditionally believed that such a communion with the public and especially football lovers is an occasion for the transmission of ancestral blessings to galvanize the team to victory.
The AFCON will be launched on Friday, June 21st in Cairo Egypt.It would run through July 19, and for the first time involves 24 teams as against the usual 16 teams. The battle for the trophy promises to be rude given the number of stages to go through.
The Indomitable Lions are the current cup holders. They are drawn in Group F with Ghana, Benin and Guinea Bissau. This year they will be playing in the absence of some of their key players including Aboubakar Vincent who suffered an injury.
