Gunmen Kidnap Student On Eve Of GCE Exams, Demand FCFA 5 Million Ransom

Kumba (National Times )-Unknown gunmen have kidnapped a form five  student in Kumba, South West Region of Cameroon  barely days to the start of the written phase of the 2019 session of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations.

The student whose only name The National Times got as Benita went missing Friday May 24th. Witnesses said her abductors have called the family of Benita demanding a ransom of FCFA 5 million. The unknown abductors are said to have issued a deadline of Tuesday May 28th,

An acquaintance of the family hinted that, the gunmen are threatening the worst if the ransom is not paid on the announced date. The National Times gleaned that, Benita is of Nigerian extraction. Circumstances under which the student was abducted remain unknown.

Abductions of students and teachers are not new in the city of Kumba. Most schools across the city have been abandoned since the Anglophone crisis morphed into an armed conflict.

Today’s development has left the education community nervous. A handful of students and pupils have defied threats from the unknown to acquire education without putting on official school uniforms.

No group has claimed responsibility for the action.We are monitoring the developments and will update our readers on any twist in the story.
