Palestinian Football Association (FA) Chief Jibril Rajoub called on Arab and Muslim football fans to burn photos and jerseys of Lionel Messi if he attends a friendly match between Argentina and Israel next weekend.
“Messi is a symbol of peace and love,” the FA chief said. “We ask him not to participate in laundering the crimes of the occupation”.
Jibril Rajoub added, “has tens of millions of fans in the Arab and Muslim countries, we ask everyone to burn their shirts which bear his name and posters with his image”.
The South Americans will play a World Cup warm-up match at Jerusalem’s Teddy Kollek Stadium on 9 June.
All the 20,000 tickets for the friendly sold out in just 20 minutes, the company in charge of the sales said.
Rajoub has accused Israel of having political motivations for the friendly.
