Over 10,000 students are attending holiday classes in Buea Municipality, Mayor Ekema reveals

The Mayor of Buea, Ekema Patrick Esunge, says over 10,000 students in his municipality are currently attending holiday classes to prepare themselves for the effective resumption of the 2018/2019 academic year.

Mayor Ekema was speaking in an exclusive interview granted The National Times, barely two weeks to the official kick-off of a new school year. As the official date for the resumption of classes (September 3) narrows, preparations for the new school year among parents and business persons are still very timid in the Buea municipality and the South West Region at large.

In Buea, bookshops are still empty as most, if not all, the text books on the official book list are nowhere to be found. Stores that deal in stationeries and didactic materials are still very scanty. In fact, the back to school effervescent is still to grip the South West Regional capital Buea.

Parents on the other hand are still in a state of dilemma on the resumption of school this academic year.

Despite the rather gloomy atmosphere surrounding effective school resumption in the conflict-plagued South West Region, Mayor Ekema was upbeat that the 2018/2019 academic year will be free and peaceful. “Every strategy has been mapped out by the Council in collaboration with the Ministries of Secondary and Basic Education to ensure the massive resumption of schools in Buea and the South West Region.”

Meanwhile, in the heat of the Anglophone Crisis where kidnappings and assassinations have become the order of the day, Mayor Ekema maintained that preemptive measures have been adopted not only to curb these vices, but also to ensure the safety of pupils, students and teachers come September 3.

The Mayor also called on parents to send their children to school, because to him, “education is the only gift a good parent can give to a child as they are the future leaders of this great country called Cameroon. I urged the population of Buea and the South West Region in general to be their brothers’ keeper to uphold peace and unity in Cameroon.”

Regarding the October 7 Presidential election, the municipal authority said, he will ensure that CPDM wins in his municipality, as every measure has been put in place to accelerate the election process in Buea.
