Douala (National Times) – Cameroon has recorded a moderate decline in its banana production for the months of February 2018/2019 period notwithstanding the shutdown of operations at its key banana producer Cameroon Development Corporation.
Information released by the Banana Producers Association of Cameroon (Assobacam) reveals that the country exported 21,497 tons of bananas in January 2019. The figure is 2,039 from the 23,536 tons that were produced at the same time last year.
However, the decline is moderate in light of the fact Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) has shutdown its banana operations due to insecurity in the South West regions.
However, the largest banana producer, subsidiary of French company, Compagnie fruitière de Marseille -PHP- exported 19,730 tons of banana in January 2019, an increase by more than 2,000 tons compared to the 17,333 tons shipped in January 2018. Exports of Boh Plantations produced 1,767 tons in in the same month.
