Yaounde (National Times)-Cameroon’s pioneer senate president since 2013 Marcel Niat Njifenji has been reelected to continue at the helm of the upper legislative chamber on Thursday March 14. It follows the reelection of Honourable Cavaye Yeguie Jibril earlier in the day for the 27th consecutive year as speaker of the national assembly.
Niat who stood unopposed during the election scored 92 votes out of the 100 member senate to stay on for the 7th consecutive year. Niat 84 was born on October 26th, 1934 in Bangangte Nde Division of the West Region.
He is a former long-serving Director General of the erstwhile electricity company AES-Sonel. During the 1990s, the politician was part of the Government. He is a frontline member of president Biya’s CPDM party.
The senator is just recovering from ill health after he missed out on the campaign trail for the October , 2018 presidential election. He was also absent when president Biya took the oath of office on November 6th , 2018 for his current seven year mandate.
