Paris (National Times)-Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses have picked a ticket to stay on in the FIFA Women’s World Cup underway in France. The development is the outcome of a spectacular comeback in their last group game against New Zealand on Thursday June 20. The team defeated their opponent 2 goals to 1.
The victory puts the lions on 3 points after suffering two defeats in earlier games at the tournament. It puts them among the first four best ranked third teams in the group stages. It is on the bases of such that Cameroon occupies the 3rd spot in the best third teams in the group stage with 2.4 goals and 3 points. Brazil, China and Nigeria sailed through to the next level of the tournament based on the same rule.
Today’s victory has electrified renewed support for the Lions across Cameroon. Most fans had lost interest in the team after their successive defeats in the first two outings. Many still hold misgivings over the ability of Coach Alain Djeumfa and his play style. Sports pundits say Djeumfa is unable to make use of the available talents in the current squad.
President Biya and Wife Chantal are among those who tweeted moments after the match to congratulate the lionesses. Biya tweeted that “Congratulations to the indomitable lionesses! You have been heroic. I am with you wholeheartedly” . Chantal Biya wrote “Thank You to the Indomitable lionesses. We are behind you”.
In the round of 16th, Cameroon will face England on Sunday June 23rd. African Champions Nigeria will battle it out with Germany. Australia and Norway will flex muscles. France will clash with Brazil. Spain’s opponent is the United States. Sweden will play against Canada. China will face Italy while Holland and Japan will lock horns.
